A Park and a Show
The Theater at Hunter’s Point
When approached by a developer to design an outdoor theater for a new park, we aimed to set a precedent for outdoor performance spaces in New York City.
LOCATION: Long Island City
CLIENT: Residential Development Group
OVERVIEW: 1150-Seat Outdoor Theater
SERVICES: Architecture
The bandshell behind the stage is the architectural focal point, visually anchoring the theater while projecting sound of the performances out to the seating bowl and park beyond.
Using parametric modeling, we designed the bandshell as a lightweight gridshell that morphs from column to roof. Clad in bleached wood panels and integrated with stage lighting and speakers, its dually-functioning form stands out in the park while complementing the surrounding natural landscape.
