In the transfer joint, we proposed a thickened wall that rises and slopes like the mountains. The organic shapes and transparency of materials open up the space and are both soothing and centering.
The river begins to come to life in the patterns on the floor that encourage traffic flow through the corridor and continue in the sinuous lines all around.
Up through the corridor’s layers echoing the strata left as the river cuts through rock. Moving into the space, wall itself is brought to life through different shapes and sizes of fins made of acrylic panels in varying shades of color.
We had fun using light and color in the departures corridor. As the trains arrive and depart, the fins light up in the direction of travel with the color corresponding to the train line.
We used elements of light and wind to mimic circadian rhythm and to alert passengers to the arrival of the trains.
Abstraction of tea terracing with ceiling forms, fins, and lighting that transcend the walls and move people through the station.
A harmony is created through the reflection of these elements onto the floor as people move through the space. The central dome is inspired by the shape of an inverted tea leaf and constructed of metal veins that are connected by a translucent LED screen.
The leaflike dome floats down into the transfer joint of the arrival floor to welcome passengers and provide guided information regarding travel, local conditions, and events.
From the illuminated lines that begin on the floor in the arrivals level to the flowing fins in the ceiling at the departures level, so much of our design is in the service of wayfinding and helping direct motion with shapes, light, and sound.
