A Gathering Space for Ideas

Mississippi State University

Data & Technology Center Reception Gallery

Our founder, Kimberly Brown, was born and bred in Mississippi. Having grown up in the academic world of MSU, she attended the school and also enjoyed key positions of leadership at the School of Architecture. This project holds a special place in our portfolio.

LOCATION: Starkville, MS

CLIENT: Mississippi State University Foundation

OVERVIEW: Data & Technology Center

SERVICES: Architecture, Interior Design

The team at the Data & Technology center had a challenge - the entrance of their space was underground. This meant it was dark and not able to draw people. The proverbial lightbulb turned on and we knew part of our solution had to be about light, literally.

There are parts of every college campus that don’t need to make any effort for us to love them - the idyllic college green, the scholarly library, the stately residence hall. There are other spaces that need more help, and bright ideas to come to life, like the Reception Area for the MSU Foundation.

Light is one of our passions at KBA and we knew right away that our solution was going to be all about one of our passions; light.  1. chandelier to bring light, to give the space an ambiance and in this way draw people in

With a nod to speed and cost effectiveness KBA sourced and used off the shelf components in creative ways. Beams were used to create dynamic patterns in the ceiling reminiscent of the organic structure of a hive as a replacement to the metal pan ceiling that was heavy, dark, and uninspiring.

A dynamic and immersive exhibition space that seamlessly blends physical and digital work experiences, the space functions as an interactive demonstration theater and venue for internal workshops.
